Begin the advance with a short, light, and well-measured step, fixing the eye on the ditch and re- garding it steadily, quicken the pace when nearing it, select the spot and plant the pole without halt, springing by the left, the position of body and lower limbs as in first exercise, de cend yielding, bringing the pole to the balance.
