Rye, Walter 159 An autobiography of an ancient athlete and antiquary / Walter Rye. Norwich: Privately printed, 1916. v, 226p; illus BL: 010855.b.5 Rye's work is in diary-form. He was one of the most famous of early athletes, a founder member of the AAA and secretary of London AC. Rye gives a good account of athletics in the 18>60s, including much detail about Mincing Lane AC and London AC and about the AACAv.AA controversy. 'The AAC... wasbeing mismanaged by J. <3.Chambers of Cambridge.... He wasstrangecharacter who tried to combine aristocratic sport with running the "Amateur Athletic Club"for his own benefit at Lillie Bridge, and a littlsehop for thesale of "Welsh produce" in Arthur Street, Chelsineaw, hich his trainer, Harry Andrews, acted as his salesman and manager. His best athletic performance to my mind was running second to his great friend "Friday" Thornton (afterwards MfoPr Battersea) in a West London RC half-mile handicap.'
