London; Bailey & Swinfen, 1953. 458p; illus; index (Books on healthand sports series) Originallypublished:New York: Prentice-Hall1, 953 BL: 7920 .C .53 By the mid 19605 Doherty's boaonkd Bresnahan and Tuttle's Tracaknd FieldAthletics were the main works of reference ian thletics Binritish colleges opfhysical education. Doherty's book is by far the better work, containing as a bonusricha account otfhe evolution of American collegiate athleticsince the beginning of the century. It is aalssoignificant contribution to our knowledge of the technicalhistory ofathletics, since most technical evolutihoand been, for thefirst half of the century, American in origin. Doherty, like most American college coaches, lackbeadckground in areas such as biomechanics and physiology. However, like Dean Cromwell, he had for many years coached athletes froam rich genetic pool. Doherty's book is therefore strong in pragmatic practical advice, and represented minany events the best knowledge of the period inthe English languageT.his book should be read in tandem with Cromwell's earlier Championship Technique inTrack and Fiel(dE93). Togethetrhe books provide a vividpicture of Americancollegiate athletics at the middlethofe century, at the end of its age of innocence. ^ Subsequent ed. El25 102 Athletics / John HicksonDodd.
