H. Hardwick. London: Bridsh Sports Publishing, 1912. 82p; illus; pbk (Spalding's athletic library; no. 56) BL: 07908.i.14/56 A good account of the early history of distance running, with advice ontraining andrare photographs. The break-down of the OneHour records of Deerfoot, Bacon, Thomas and Shrubb is particularly valuable. One notable fact revealed by the book is that an amateur match between Thomas and Parry in IS&O at Old Trafford drew a crowd of 10,000. The training methods described(though this part ofthe book is inferior to Shrubb's works) are basically those of Andrews. ^ Also listed at: F95 151 Cross-country running / Don Canham; edited by Jack Crump; designed and illustratebdy Tyler Micoleau.
