Athletes in Action
THE HIGH JUlVIP. EASTERN CUT-OFF (4) THE picture opposite (Fig. 4) shows Simmons at that stage when the momentum generated by the initial swing, combined with the upward kick of the free leg, is nearly expended. The time has almost come, in fact, for the take-off leg to come into action again with its secondary kick. As soon as the free leg (the right throughout our series of pictures) has passed over the cross-bar as far as the knee, it begins to turn over on to its inside surface and the hips commence twisting more sharply from right to left than does the trunk. This action is clearly shown in the picture opposite. At the same time the arms fall again below shoulder-level and the trunk is inclined forward to a greater degree than was shown in Fig. 3· The initial work of the free (right) leg, which has been raising the body by the power of its kick, is now almost finished and it is time for the left leg, from which the spring was made, to come into action again. But no attempt must be made to start the secondary kick of the left leg until the knee, or even a part of the thigh, of the right leg has passed safely over the cross-bar. There is one word of warning to be uttered, which is this: ON NO ACCOUNT 1\t1UST YOU CHOP THE RIGHT LEG DOWN ON TO THE BAR AS THE LEFT LEG BEGINS TO RISE IN THE SECONDARY KICK-ACTION, rather must you try to let the left leg continue its upward swing as the right leg gets in its secondary lifting kick. ...... ..... .....
