Athletes in Action

179 II P, TEP A D JU~1P. TH • HOP (3) s soon as the momentum of the upward spring from the left foot off the take-off board i beginning to dwindle, the athlete bring the left (take-off) leg into acti n again, and, by means of a quick pick-up of the left knee, carries the left leg f rward past the right. This knee pick-up action helps to prolong the upwards and onwards flight of the body during the Hop, but care must be taken to keep the foot of the left leg back as the knee goes forward, otherwise the landing will be effected with the left leg fully extended, an undue strain will be impos d upon the stiffened limb and there wi 11 be no flexed knee power for the second forward drive comprising the tep action. The slight forward body-lean, and the straightness of the trunk, mu t be maintained as the left knee comes through and is picked up. The right leg is allowed to drop down almost, but not quite, straight from the full kn e flexion shown in Fig. 2. The right arm, bent at the lb w, comes forward in correspondence with the action f the left leg, and the left arm begins to swing out to the left side below shoulder-leYel in a well-balanced action. Care must be taken to preserve the "running-in- the-air ' attitud , and the houldcrs and hips must still remain square to the front. ote that g od f rm does not p rmit of the back being holl w d nor must the head be thrown back in an exaggerated endeavour to lift the left knee to an undue pick-up height.
