Athletes in Action

;:! I HOP, STEP ..\ND JU~IP-SU~L\L\RY (z) TnE pictures on the opposite page show the Step, or middle phase, of the triple Jump. This middle phase must be a real Step in character and not merely an elongated Jump from one foot to the other. The athlete should not endeavour to make the Step as long as possible, othenvise he will not have sufficient strength left to accomplish the succeeding Jump. , The real trick of achieving a successful Step lies in the ability of the athlete to build up sufficient muscle control to enable him to trail the rear leg and the whole side of the body to which that leg is attached. The rear leg must hang at full length and the abdomen should give way easily sideways, but while the rear leg is trailing and the "''hole accom- panying side of the body is relaxed the shoulders and hips must be held square to the front.
