Athletes in Action

.. • HA:\1:\IER THRO\YI:-.JG. CORRECT TUR~ING ACTION THE extra picture on the page opposite is of ~I. C. Kokes, O.U._'\.C. and Great Britain, who has been four times .\.A.~\. Champion and is the holder of the English Native Hammer Throwing Record of I 72 ft. ot ins . 1\okes shows the typically fine, heavy development of the hammer-throwing fraternity, and the picture I have chosen of him represents admirably the excellence of his form. It will be seen that he has travelled already across the circle as far as the commencement of the second swing round, or turn, upon the ball of the left, or pivotal, foot . He shows an admirably balanced position to resist the pull of the hammer, while yet retaining the right poise for a rapid spin upon the left foot. The point, however, \Vhich should be especially noted in connection with the illustration is the manner in which Nokes is turning with his arms out at absolutely full stretch . It may be said, indeed, that his arms arc serv1ng the purpose of prolonging the hammer shaft and that the weight of the whirling hammer-head is being allO\ved to pull the arms well out, on supple muscles from the shoulder-joints. Note also the first movement at the beginning of the left-foot turn, in picking up the right knee, preparatory to carrying the right leg around the left in the turn. ~ ~ \.0
