CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING 71 Cross-country running, if properly indu!ged in, is one of the most healthful recreations I know of, even if one does not follow it in the hope of becoming a champion distance run– ner. If indulged in moderately it strengthens every part of the body, and I have seen many a boy who was almost made over by the sport. Some persons have the idea that cross-coun– try running necessarily reduces the weight. If indulged in properly it will put on weight besides toning up the entire body. Not only is it good for distance runners, but in a mod– ified form is invaluable for football players, 03:rsmen, and those who merely want some good conditioning exercise. The best results from cross-country running are obtained in the fall, winter, and early spring. Cross-country running should never be done in extremely cold weather, and al– ways in cool weather the athlete should be properly dressed. He should always wear a long-sleeved jersey with a neck. Under– neath his running trousers he should wear a pair of long _drawers and, in addition to com– fortable shoes, a pair of socks. If running against the wind in very cold weather it is
