208 Athletics of To-day At Antwerp in rgzo when Wm. Petterson, Sweden, won at 23 ft. 5! ins., w. Hunter, Great Britain, was I3th at 2I ft. ot in., and Abrahams 20th at rg ft. ro! ins. At Paris, how– ever, C. E. Macintosh, O.U.A.C., who had won the Public Schools title in rg22 at 20 ft. 6 ins., and the Oxford and Cam– bridge event in r924 at 23ft. 4 ins., gained 6th place for Great Britain with a jump of 22 ft. 5 ins. At Amsterdam, rg28, our representatives were H. ]. Cohen, C.U.A.C., and R. W. Revans, University of London; the former succeeded in just beating 22 ft. De Hart Hubbard could not find his form. Ed. Ham, a white American, won at 25ft. 4! ins., with S. Cator, Haiti, second at 24 ft. ro! ins. Ham is a truly remarkable athlete, and when, on August rrth, rgz8, in the British Empire v. U.S.A. match, he set up a new British record of 25ft. r in., that was the eighth consecutive competition in which he had succeeded in beating 25 ft. A. Bates, U.S.A., was third at 24ft. 8 ins., and Hubbard fourth at 24 ft. 6 ins. The Empire has, however, produced some notable long jumpers in H. M. Abrahams, England, 24 ft. zt ins.; C. D. Bricker, anada, rgrz Olympiad, second, 23 ft. 8 ins. ; Dr. R. St ]. Honner, Australia, A.A.A. hampion, rg25, 23 ft. rr ins., and rg26, 23 ft. 8 ins. ; S. ]. M. Atkinson, South Africa, 24 ft. r! ins., and W. . Harrison, Australia, 22 ft. rot ins., both at the British Empire and U.S.A. match, rgz8. There is, however, hope for us in the prowess of our Public School boys, for there ar several of the present generation who bid fair to become second Locktons. J. . :rvt:oll, Bedford School, at eleven years of age cleared I3 ft. 4 ins. in r924, an even more remarkable performance than that of Lockton in r86g, and in rg28 a sixteen years old Dover School boy, F. W. Goodbody, did 20 ft. r in. and a week later 20 ft. 9 ins., while ]. impson, Oundle, in April of that year, put up a new Public chools record of 22 ft. 3! ins. When all is said and done, however, it simply amounts to this: there is in England as good material as anywhere else in the world, but the boys get next
