90 AUTOBIOGRAPHY that the river was much fuller of bird life, especially of kingfishers and moorhen, under new regulations. On the 1st August I rode my new trike by Edmonton, Chingford. Epping Forest, Greenstead to Chipping Ongar, when I slept at Lion (F. Gibbs) . Next day I took a trap and drove over to see the wooden Church and Kelvedon Hatch where my grandfather and grandmother were married. Then triked to Great Parndon " Cock," on to Hertford, where I stopped at the '' Salisbury,'' and on by the lower road to Hatfield and Barnet, lunching at the " Red Lion," and so home. 9th, On new trike to see G.B. and back, over r 1 miles in 6r. 14th to 16th, "Thames Lawn," for the Marlow, Suf. Regatta. This was once Edmund Yates' house, but except some good engravings, squalid and vulgar. I spent a lazy Sunday seeing the people go through lock. 21st, Rail to Forncett, slept at P.B.F.'s. 22nd, to Norwich, lunch with E.B.G. F.G.R. brought trike and we went round curiosity shops. I then worked round by Dereham, Swaffham, and through heavy rain to Lynn. 25th, Hunstanton, lunch at '' Golden Liou,'' and slept at Burnham, and left machine at the '' Hoste Arms." On the 28th I had a very good ride (51 miles) by coast to Cromer,Aylsham and Norwich. I practicallysaved the life of an elderly female bicyclist when machine had bolted with her by letting her run gently into me down Sheringham Hill ! On this journey I saw H.T.G. for last time. Elborough Dumpie, and D.M.R. joined 5th. The old round till the 12th; Gibb (Doctor Gibb's son) joined 12th. On the 15th, saw the '' Eel's Foot" for the first and last time; Little joined 17th, Gibb left 19th, by Stalham coast to Norwich and back. Sail up the Ant and towed to Buxton Lammas, where the episode of the goat occurred, and then by taxed cart to Aylsham and by Blickling. 26th, at Nor– wich saw E.B.G. for last time. Early in October I had a business journey to Manchester, Bury and Rochdale, all three towns dirty and unpleasant. 17th, rail to St. Albans and triked to H.H. to see my sisters, and back in the rain, about 22 miles. On my birthday and November to Edenbridge, Millard and E.B. shooting, the latter only getting seven birds for 37 shots (counted). I hardly shot anything at all except a very big stoat ! On the 8th, at Seymour Lucas', met McWhirter the artist. 14th, with G.B. to Croydon to see
