Walked over to Croham Hurst by the "Red Deer," and back to Carshalton, when we had both a good lunch and wine at the "Greyhound." On the igth, E.B.G. died, and the 23rd I came from London to his funeral at Norwich. the funeral service being at St. John's Maddermarket. December I 1th, to W.W.R.B.'s rooms at Trinity College, Cambridge; excellent wine at the upper table and a very fine plaster ceiling in his room. 20th, to Waterloo with boys, met Groombridge and tried to find our old 12 mile course; fair lunch at « Dog and Fox.'' 26th, to Selborne with F.G.R. and A.L.R., A. Radnall did not turn up, but came later. During the year (1896) I only published one book, the " Index to Norfolk Pedigrees" with an Appendix to "Nor– folk Topography:' It is now very scarce, why I don't know. Early in the year 1897, I had a business journey to Liverpool where I stayed at the N.W. Hotel, and saw docks and landing stage, but could not get on to Chester as I had hoped. "Bear's Foot" restaurant at Liverpool interesting and good. On the 8th and 9th January, I went to Norwich with Arthur Rackham and to Yarmouth abont E. B. G's. business, and back to London ; very uncomfortable in snow and fog. The end of January (22nd) was a very deep snow, and I trained to Mill Hill and walked by the Hale through heavy snow drifts to Edgware, a policeman and I forming the only traffic. We met in the middle and used one another's tracks as we each returned. After a visit to the curiosity shop, went back to the Hale and lunched. Up to the 24th there was continual tobogganing, and on the next day I had to help a D.T. case close by. There was an extremely funny episode for my sons having gone to a private lunatic asylum for skilled help, unluckily gave the wrong address, and two burly attendants shortly after knocked up a respectable fat German under the impression he was the patient, and tried, soothingly, to get him to come quietly to his intense wrath.
