The next day I rode back by Bergholt, Capel and Copdock to Ipswich, where Quilter, au old Birmingham Aston man, a friend of J.J .B., kept the house► He is 6 ft. 2 ins. high and all his sons are taller. By Woodbridge to Saxmundham (lunch) and Hales– worth, I slept at the "Angel.'' It was intensely hot so I rode back in the evening by Beccles to Norwich. On the 8th, 9th, and 10th to B.L. at Horsford, looking at his deeds and MSS., and I think impregnated him with antiquarian virus. Rode across to Cawston on the 10th where I stayed at Marsh's, whence I rode over the next day to J essopp's, Seaming, and on the next two days on by Swafflrnm, Lynn, Hunstanton and Burnham, as usual by the coast to Wells, Cley, Cromer, Mundesley, where I slept at the '' Clarence," which my old manager Pomeroy of the "Maid's Head'' was keeping. Back to Norwich and North Walsham, to find my rest► On 17th September, my wife D.M.R. and girls joined the boat at Wroxham. The 22nd was a bad salt tide, killing many fish and eels. During the week we went on to Wayford Bridge, Swafield, Acle, Yarmouth, Beccles, and to Bungay on " Round about." Next week we were at Oulton, Stokes by, Coltishall (but no further), Wroxham, where we left the boat, and back by train on the 1st October. I articled M.M.R. on the 12th October to Miss Walford to learn the old Court hand at the Record Office. Each week I had good, if dull rides. I was the only one of a party of eight on the 23rd, to ride up Barnet Hill. Once more we made journey to Selborne for the T.H.H. meeting from Petersfield, game stew as usual. On the 18th rode, came back on the Sunday, being determined not to attend another meeting, there being too much noiser rowdiness, and smoke. October 31st, my birthday was celebrated by a debate in which A.L.R., was the only one not
