An Autobiography of an Ancient Athlete & Antiquarian
AUTOBIOGRAPHY and I took a few days' rest at Norwich, when I discussed with H.B. the possibility of :financing a matter which afterwards turned out a great success, but which then seemed to be of a very doubtful character. On the 28th was Edwin T. Sachs' wedding at St. Luke's, Chelsea, to which I went with my wife. Having taken a three weeks' rest I had an excellent ride before lunch of 27 miles, the machine having been done up and going beautifully. To Norwich on the 18th, and had another look at Bacon's house. On the 18th to 25th March a very cold, chilly week , so back home after visits to Dr. J essopp and B.L. The Easter I spent with A.L.R. and Betty at Sel– borne, and had a long pretty ride to Frensham Ponds, which was a very ordinary tea-gardeny sort of place, and back by Farnham and Alton, and on the 5th April A.L.R. played for the village eleven, but got o and 3 only ! On April 13th, to Norwich. I had thought of buying old Surrey House, occupied by Emerson, and bid up to £1,800, but it was bought by the Norwich Union Life Office. 29th, I went to Southwick to consult Grun as to palpi– tation, and saw Col. Cumberlege's race horses. May 6th, to Hemel Hempstead with M.M.R. Then I rode over. and I slept at the "Bell" at Carshalton, where I saw R. w_ Reay. whose eyes had gone bad, and back by the '' Rye,' 1 Sutton Road, round by Cheam and Malden. I railed to Richmond on the 21st, and then rode on to Cobham, where I slept, eating lunch on the Hog's Back, getting in very wet about four. D.M.R., E.M.B., and Dumpie down the night before, and F.G.R. and A.L.R. by morning train. Whit Monday (22nd) I rode back to Farnham, 15 miles (1.29), went over Hog's Back, very tired, to Guildford, slept Cobham. The next day rode home by myself. On June 1st, rode over to the Hale for supper. 2nd and 3rd at F.'s, and went over with him lo St. Leonard's Priory, which I afterwards bought. On the 10th I rode down to Cobham to meet G.B., and came back the next day by Cobham, Leatherhead, Epsom, Ewell, Carsbalton, Mitcham, about 3 r miles before lunch. Took S. Lucas to see Lamport and its 25 old costumes and the Processional Cross there on the 17th; very hot and the trap missed us!
