An Autobiography of an Ancient Athlete & Antiquarian

162 AUTOBIOGRAPHY probably caused by the Knowl or Knock having been -dredged. On the 22nd August my nephew, E. W. Rye (" Dobbie ''), and his wife and three children, paid me a short visit at Lammas, when I rose to the occasion and did 47 at 80 and 165 (35 hits) at 60, total 212 1 which remains my best practice record. On Monday, 24th, I made 37 hits out of 48 for r68, my best on record in practice at 60 yards, but at the Small– burgh Meeting only did r r 7 for both distances. On the 27th Angust I went over to Lowestoft to see the Goodwins, and accompanied Mr. Goodwin in a very stinking petrol bus to Southwold, when I saw the Church and walked by the cliffs to Covehithe, going over the fine old ruins and rejoining the bus there. Ou the 29th I had a week-end visit to Tasburgh. My shooting went off again till the 3rd September, when I made 29 hits at 60 for 130, on the 5th 30 hits for r5r, and on the 6th 32 for 152. At the East Bilney Meeting, with a 33 lb. bow strung to s¾, I did my best public performance of 17 at 80 and 32 at 60 for 136, or in all 153 for the double round. On this, however, I improved at the Boulderson Meet– ing at Aylsham, where with a 36 bow strung to st I made 2r at 80 and 33 ont of 48, or 151 at 60, in all 172, as against my best practice score of 212. On the 17th September I went over to the Rev. George Keppel'::; at Cringleford Hall, and found a fine old Elizabethan door in a bedroom. There used to be a prehistoric barrow in the garden, and there is still an interesting moat. On the 3rd September, 1908, I twice made fair scores in practice, 130 and r 14, on the 5th 15 r and rr9, and on the 6th 152. On the 8th I did a respectable performance at the East Bilney Meeting, for though I only made 17 at 80 I got 32 arrows on for 136 at 60, thus making a total of 153, which I think was my best public score until I did 172 at Mrs. Boulderson's Meeting at Aylsham, made up of 21 and 151. After this I fell off my practice scores, on roth October being 129, 127, and II9. On the 14th September I was, to my great astonish– ment, asked to act as Mayor of Norwich, and after talking the matter over with Warren, the Conservative Agent, and
