An Autobiography of an Ancient Athlete & Antiquarian
AUTOBIOGRAPHY 207 At the final Beeston Meeting at North Walsham I got on 26 arrows for 96, beating Mack, Miss F. Holway, and others. This was my last archery meeting, and afterwards both clubs agreed to drop all meetings until after the war was over. Gilly having joined the Army directly the war broke out, was gazetted to a cavalry regiment, but refused it, as he preferred to stick to the H.A.C., which be had joined as a private. He served in the War till, having been sent home wounded, he obtained a commission in the London Rifle Brigade. From the r 1th September to the 24th (14 days) I was under drastic treatment again, for the longest time on record, but I think it had a good permanent effect. On the 24th Gilly came to say good-bye to me before going to the front. On the rst of October I railed to Foulsham and cycled on to Purdy's to see bis shoot. Lockhart Ross, who shot marvellously well, D. Spurrell, and others there. Rode home all the way. Next Saturday to Tasburgh. Monday was the beginning of the Government control of our branch line. On the 17th of October, I bad another journey to London, and the next day took taxi to Waterloo with F.G.R. to Alton, where I met Savery and Hipgood, and with the latter trained and cut the roses. On Monday drove on to meet young Lucas, and bring fish back, and on the afternoon of the 20th I returned to London, sleeping at H.G.R.'s flat, and came back to Norfolk on Wednesday, after seeing the Nelson's Column decoration and having lunch at Simpson's. On the rst of November, Purdy having come over to investigate the site of Gimmingbam Castle, we drove over, but while having au alfresco lunch the pony was stung by two wasps when the bit was ont of her mouth, aud bolted with me, I being the only one left in the trap. I managed practically to choke, guide her round a corner, and run her deep into a thick hedge, but it was a very narrow escape for me. Just about this time I was very busy in connection with the village Volunteer Movement, and on the 4th of Novem– ber I went over by request to Coltishall to move a resolution and afterwards tried for rifles, but could get none.
