Perhaps this supposition arose from the fact that the professional, having previously run a trial over the distance, caused his backer to gamble on the strength of that performance; consequently the latter would be inclined to look with suspicion on the bona fides of the race, should his man be defeated and the time prove to be slower than that shown in the trial.
