PREFACE. IN the following pages, which I hope may be found to contain some remarks of use to young athletes, I give a catalogue of amateur records at most of the recognised d istances in the order m which they were established. Many of those records, created in the early days of athletics, have been somewhat difficult to obtain, so that I trust to be forgiven should there be any names omitted from this catalogue that are entitled to find honourable mention therein.
