Fourmiles in twenty is said to puzzle the cleverest. len miles an hour is done by all the best runners, l ifteenmiles in an hour and a half has never perhaps beendone. Forty miles in four hours and threequarters or less, it is said, was done by one individual. As to greatdistances, Kainerfailed in two attempts to accomplish 100 miles in eighteen hours. Captain Barclay'swalking 180 miles without resting, and also 1000 miles in 1000 successive hours, are sufticiently well known.
