DISTANCE AND MARATHON RUNNING On the days the athlete runs only once he may take, in addition to the run, a 3 hours' walk at 5 miles per hour. Long walks should be followed by a warm bath and massage, to ease the leg muscles. The runs are to be done strictly to time schedules, and must be checked by the stop-watch. Marathon racing must be followed by a period of gradual training-off. A man's health will suffer if he stops training suddenly after a victory or a defeat. A wise co?-ch ·watches the Marathon man's weight chart, remembering that a man J?ay lose pounds in weight through violent and prolonged exercise, but will regain it all, almost within the space ofhours, if his training is being carried out on the right lines.
