THE JAVELIN THROW Tuesday. Sprint 20 yds. with javelin carried properly twice at half speed, and the same distance at three-quarter speed three times for even striding. For fault correction practise three-strides approach, cross-step, and delivery action without throwing, four times at a walk and four times at a trot. Wednesday. Sprint 50 yds. at seven-eighths effort twice. Make six throws at half effort to correct weak points in style and six throws at three-quarter effort for co-ordination. Massage. Thursday. Walk 4 or 5 miles, trotting 100 yds. in each mile, or work I hour in gymnasium. Friday. Rest. Massage. Saturday. Practise full approach run, incorporating last three bounding strides, working at quarter to half effort four times. 5 mins. of tig. Make two throws at half effort for co-ordination, two throws at half effort for fault correction, and take a trial of six throws at three-quarter effort. Massage. MID-SEASON TRAINING Mid-season training should occupy another month, to be devoted to perfecting style, stabilizing the approach run and transition to the throwing stance, and polishing up all points in technique. The ·athlete should have a minor competition, or a trial of six throws made under competition conditions, each Saturday during this month. A specimen schedule for one week is as follows : Monday. Tig for~s mins. Three throws at quarter effort and three at half effort for correction of faults. Six throws with full-rength approach run at half effort for height, direction, and steady flight. Massage. Tuesday. Practise approach run twice at half effort, twice at three– quarter effort, and twice at nine-tenths effort, building speed progressively, working in bounding strides, or final hop, according to style used, and releasing javelin without putting any effort into the throw. Wednesday. Tig for 5 mins. Four throws at quarter effort to im– prove any weakness in style. Two throws at half effort to correct faults, six throws at three-quarter effort for direction, height, and steady flight. Massage. · Thursday. Train with the sprinters. Friday. Rest. Massage. Saturday. Tig for 3 mins. Suppling exercises for 3 mins. Minor competition or trial of six throws. 399
