Fifty Years of Progress 1880-1930

Fortunately, of recent years, these have far exceeded expectations, as the following figures show:- PROFIT ON THE CHAMPIONSHIPS £ 192.4 . 1,180 (Year of Olympic Games) 1925 1,043 1926 1,609 1927 1,501 1928 1,641 (Year of Olympic Games) Nineteen hundred and twenty-eight was, needless to say, the record year. Rather more than 29,000 attended the Championships, and I 8,866 programmes were sold. When we compare this with 1900, referred to previously, which was a record at that time, we find that in 1928 we exceeded the figures of gate money and programmes by more than four times. This in itself shows the tremendous progress and advance of amateur sport. Then in 1928 there was the International Meeting, U.S.A. v. British Empire, which provided a record attendance at Stamford Bridge for an athletic meeting of upwards of 41,000, and 21,700 pro– grammes were sold. The gate money on the day was just under £2,700. With these growing profits we were soon "discovered" by H.M. Inspector ofTaxes, with the result that, notwithstanding appeals, questions in the " House," etc., the Treasury insists upon sharing our profits to the extent of the standard rate of Income Tax. Under the present conditions, with so much to make up to meet general expenditure, we can scarcely be expected to accumulate large amounts in the way ofinvested funds. Thanks, however, to the excellent results of the past few years and the International Meetings with U.S.A. 100
