Fifty Years of Progress 1880-1930

OUR LEADERS PRESIDENT LoRD DEsBoROUGH, K.G., G.C.V.O., who was unanimously elected President, to succeed the late Sir Montague Shearman, is one of the most famous sportsmen in the whole world. He rowed twice for Oxford against Cambridge, won the Amateur Punting Championship on three occasions, and stroked an eight across the Channel. Twice he swam across Niagara. He has been President of the M.C.C., the O.U.B.C., the Coaching Club, the Amateur Fencing Association and the Lawn Tennis Association. In our own sport, he has been President of the O.U.A.C., President of the Olympic Games (r908), and also takes a personal interest in the affairs of the Achilles Club, of which he is Presi– dent. He was a Vice-President of the A.A.A. for many years, until his election as President in r930. LIFE VICE-PRESIDENTS S1R HARRY BARCLAY: During his career, a prominent member of the Blackheath Harriers and L.A.C., though he also played Rugby football and competed in swimming races. In the Southern Counties Cross-Country Association he filled the position of Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, and President, and held the same offices in the National Cross-Country Union. Past President, Blackheath Harriers (r906), L.A.C. (r925-r926), and Surrey Walking Club (r9r3-r9r9). He was elected Hon. Secretary of the A.A.A. in r9r 5, a Vice-President in r92 5, and a Life Vice-President in r929. He has taken a prominent part in the management of International Athletics, having been a member of the Councils of the British Olympic Association and the International Amateur Athletic Federation for many years. Knighted in 1930. W. M. BARNARD: In the eighties, an active member ofthe Polytechnic Harriers, Hon. Treasurer of the Club for twenty-five years, and a great supporter of the Polytechnic Institute and its splendid work for young men. Joined the L.A.C. in I 892, and President in I 92 3. Past President of Southern Counties Cross-Country Association. After acting as Hon. Auditor to the A.A.A., he was unanimously elected to succeed Mr. C. N. Jackson as Hon. Treasurer, on his retirement in r9ro. Elected a Vice– President in r9r6 and a Life Vice-President in r925. H. A.
