Fifty Years of Progress 1880-1930

SIR MONTAGUE SHEARMAN 1929, owing to his serious illness, and was shortly afterwards appointed a member of the Privy Council. We have given but a bare idea of the loss to the legal and athletic worlds caused by our late President's death, but we have written enough to show that he carried into his forensic and judicial experiences all the sporting spirit and personal charm of his youth. Neither age nor mortal illness affected his dauntless spirit. He intended to finish his "race" with a quiet courage, and countless members of our clubs will remember his friendly encouragement, his shining example, as long as they can remember anything. To them, it is infinitely sad that he did not live to see the celebration of the Jubilee of the Association he founded, the Association he loved, an Association which owes its present position very largely to his unfailing interest and sound judgment. 25
