weight of 286 lbs. [129.73 kg] aloft with one hand. Afterwards another 56 lb. [25.4- kg] weight was attached, thus bringing the total to 342 lbs. [155.13 kg], and this Saxon also pressed overhead with one hand, thereby transforming Donald into such an enthusiastic admirer that he pronounced Saxon to be the best lifter extant. Claimants for Weight-Lifting Championship. There have, of course, been a number of splendid achievements by other athletes. Hackenschmidt is said to have performed a lift of 350 lbs. [158.76 kg]. Louis Cyr is credited with a lift of 347 lbs. [157.40 kg]. Lurich has pressed 363 lbs. [164.65 kg]. with both hands. Maspoli, the Frenchman, has done over 300 lbs. [136.08 kg]. But the mighty Steinbach has exceeded 400 lbs. [181.44 kg]. Without doubt the greatest weight-lifter at his weight is Maxick, of Munich, who although only weighing 10½ st. [147 lbs.; 66.68 kg], has lifted 322 lbs. [146.06 kg] overhead. Not a few claim the highest honours for strength tests for A.A. Cameron [something seems to be missing here]. In his treatise on “The Influence of Light,” Dr Forbes Winslow, the well- known medical and hygienic specialist, clearly shows that there can be no consistent energy nor development without light. He remarks that if it were possible for a human being to be consigned during the natural term of his existence to a place of darkness, “the physical tissues and mental faculties would undergo serious modifications and deteriorations.” In habitations where light is not permitted to permeate, there are found, in a high state of manifestation, bodily deformities, intellectual degeneration, disease, and premature, often sudden death. A material, moral and mental decay occurs when the vital stimulus of light is withdrawn. A great deal of incontestable evidence conclusively establishes the inestimable value of this agent. By way of comparison, I need only mention the bright, ruddy faces and buoyant spirits of
