ylll preface. by the abovepublication, I should have con­ ceived it a point of duty to relinquishall idea of publishing it; but as this was not the case, I did not hesitateto put my MSS. and Plates immediately to press. With a view to assist mastersand teachers in introducingthese exercises into their esta­ blishments,and to showhow small a piece of groundis requiredto enable a great numbei of boys to perform them together, I have an­ nexedmy proposedplan of an exercise-ground, which will be found to contain all the imple­ ments, &c. to which referenceis made in the followingpages, and arrangedin such a man­ ner as to admit of all the exercisesbeing per­ formedby the boys at the same time, without interfering with one another. This arrange­ ment is as follows;—
