ylll preface. by the abovepublication, I should have con ceived it a point of duty to relinquishall idea of publishing it; but as this was not the case, I did not hesitateto put my MSS. and Plates immediately to press. With a view to assist mastersand teachers in introducingthese exercises into their esta blishments,and to showhow small a piece of groundis requiredto enable a great numbei of boys to perform them together, I have an nexedmy proposedplan of an exercise-ground, which will be found to contain all the imple ments, &c. to which referenceis made in the followingpages, and arrangedin such a man ner as to admit of all the exercisesbeing per formedby the boys at the same time, without interfering with one another. This arrange ment is as follows;—
