Davin was at cratch in a wide jump handicap,and though unop­ posed, cleared the distance given, thus beating his previous record by half an inch. 2 At the Carrick-on-Suir Football Club Sports, held on July 5,1880, P.Davin did this extraordinary performance. In order to preventany dispute, several gentlemen who were present signed a letter, addressed to the editor of the Field, who, on the strength of this evidence, felt bound to accept the record. The communication, extracted from the Field of July 10, 1880, reads as follows:— "We, the undersigned, hereby certify that P. Davin did, on the 5th day of July, 1880, at the Carrick- on-Suir Athletic Sports, clear the height of 6 ft. 2| in., same having been meatured from the centre of the bar, and the ground properly tested with a spirit level. "Henry W.Briscoe. "J. P. T. Veale (Birmingham A.C.). J. P. Owen. T. Beary, Assistant County Surveyor. R. Slack. J. J, Herne, hon. sec. E. M. W.Foley. V. J. R.Dunbar, judge." The previous best performance was 6 ft. 2J in., jumped by Mr. Brooks at the Inter-University Sports Lillie Bridge, April, lb76. 3 Ray, at thePreston Athletic Association Meeting, held at the North End C.. Ground, succeeded in beating his previous best jump by half an inch. 4 This was done by Purcell at the Caledonian Games and Sports, held atDublin on Whit Monday, in splendid weather. 5 Hellwig used 161b.dumb-bells. 6 Ford,at the Columbia CollegeA.C. Meeting, on November3, 1883. He had three jumps, the second being the one jiven.
