MEN OF :\lU CLF.. so that Morrison's ultimate success was in a manner look< d for. Almost immediately after coming to Partick he began to improve, but previous to his second appearance as a "bobbie" he won both the local and open hammer-throwing at Balfron, his best distance being 99ft. 8in. This, however, was much below wh:it Morrison's ambition aimed at, and during the rest of the season he practised more than be competed. Next year he visited Balfron, and again won both competitions with the hammer, while at Clydebank, Falkirk, Kirkintilloch, and Drymen, he carried off second prize at caber-tossing. In the year 1898 Morrison was first with the caber, and second with the hammer, at Gal ton games. At the Motherwell police sports Morrison came out first with the hammer, and later on repeated the per– formance at the Glasgow police gathering. The same -season he defeated all comers with the caber at Bridge of Allan, Alva, Birnam, and Ross (Hamilton) gatherings. The following season (1899) Iorrison again won premier honours al Galston with the caber; but, although he threw the 16lb. hammer 11 tft. 4in., he had to be content with second place. At the Ross (Hamilton) games he won putting the light ball, and, in short, during the season '99 did remarkably well. But we shall pass over that period and come to la!:it summer, which embraced ~ long list of brilliart victorie., with very few defeats. At Galston, l\f orrison threw the light hammer 120 feet, which is the best distance ever done there, beating his own throw f the previous year by 8ft. Sin., and capped this by winn:, g first prize at caber-tossing as well. He threw a hammer, which weighed just inside 14lb., 128ft. 2in. at the Highland gathering at Plains, and at Auchterarder he sent a 16lb. hammer II 6ft. 9in. At Bridge of Allan he again annexed the prize for hammer-throwing, in this instance the weight was 25lb., and ~forrison made the creditable throw of 86ft. 6in.
