DONALD ROSS OF TRATIIGLASS. the open putting. The heavy ball here weighs 2 Ilb. ; Ross's putt is 37ft. 9in. Last year at Drumblair he won first prize. with heavy and light balls, the distances being-16lb., 45ft. 9in., and 22lb., 36ft. nin. At Aberfeldy he putt a 22lb. ball 37ft. 7!in. 1 an 18lb., 43ft. 8!in. (a world's record), and 16lb., 46ft. 3in.; and, of course, was first in each event. At Pitlochry, again, for the championship, he putt the 22lb. ball 37ft. 3in., and the r6lb., 45ft. 1 and at Jnyernes. putt a 2Ilb. 38ft. 2in. At the great Highland gathering at Leeds, Ross also came first with both light and heavy ball, the distances being-Heavy ball, which weighed 21lb. 15oz., 38ft. 2in.; and r6lb., 45ft. 5in. On the same day he threw a 16lb. hammer u4ft. We give the above figures to show that Ross threw well, not on one occasion, but at many different places widely apart. Many are inclined to the opinion that Ross cannot stand the strain of the "road," that is, competing at perhaps two or three different meetings in one week while living on traveller's fare, and that he loses his form unless he can always get back to his Highland home to recuperate; but this we are inclined to doubt. He has certainly been in rather indifferent form this summer, for which there seems no explanation. At least, once during the season, he weighed under 14 stone, while a man of his height and frame should be at least two stone heavier to succe ·sfully compete with the hammer, ball, or caber. In appearance, Ross seems rather too tall and lanky for an athlete. He gives one the idea that he requires filling up. Although possessed of tremendous shoulders and a broad chest, he is rather thin in the calves-a thing unu ual in Highlanders-and his arms, though muscular, are so long that they appear thinner than they really are. In throwing the hammer his height and reach give him a natural advant:i<re which, in a lesser degree, is also imparted to ball and caber.
