ALEX. A. CAMERON, OF LOCH TREIG. A LEXANDER A. CAMERON first saw the light 23 years ago at Loch Treig, Kilmonavaig, in the county of Inverness. The exact date of his birth was 28th March, 1877, and his middle name is Anthony. His father ...as a shepherd, and through the keeping of sheep Cameron, the younger, first had the opportunity of seeing a champion, and imbibing the desire of becoming one himself. When 'andy was but two years old his father removed to Kingair– loch, and here he passed his boyhood days without any thought of athletics, until one fine morning there arrived at hi father's house another shepherd, sent by Cameron's cousin from Nairn to remove a flock of sheep from Kingair– loch to the Moray Firth. This shepherd was no less a personage than Kenneth M'Rae, the great Scottish athlete. Of course, the Highland welcome and other things over, the hammer and stone had to be produced, and young c~meron accompanied the men to the level green sward, where the manly exercise was indulged in. M'Rae, by his prowess, immediately became the idol of Sandy; and, when Kenneth invited him to try a putt or throw, poor Saudy wa ashamed to own that he could scarcely throw half the di-tance which the champion had done. M'Rae, however, encouraged the lad, and, when he had putt the stone, was loud in praise of Cameron, and predicted, there and then, that he would grow up to be a great putter. And such ha been the case. Shortly after M'Rae's visit, Cameron went to reside in Fort William, where he remained for two years, and then 87
