• ALEXANDER MUNRO OF HELMSDALE. 93 Sin. For a lad of 18 this was very good, and on all sides Munro was advised to "stick in and practise." This he did to such good purpose, that for six years in succe ·sion he won the putting, increasing the distance year by year, and to show the lad's improvement we will give the throws: -first year, 34ft. 8in. ; second, 35ft. :i'1in. ; third, 37ft. 9in. These distances were all made with the same ball, but at this stage the committee introduced a new 16lb. ball, which Munro putt 41ft. 10in.. ; and finally, in 1898, before leaving Lairg, made 43ft. 8in., and also won the caber tossing in thP open competition. Besides the putting, Munro early began to take prizes with the hammer and caber and in Scotr wrestling. At Inver– carron in 1897 and 1898 he won the p..:tting, and in the last named year the Scots wrestling as well. At Dornoch, the birthplace of the famous Dan Stewart M 1 Leod, Munro won the hammer and ball in both 1897 and 1898; while at Avoch, in the Black Isle, he won the ::,cots wrestling. Up till now Munro had wrought steadily at his trade, but his oft repeated local success as an athlete made him anxious to travel south and try his fortune at the big games. In the spring of last year Munro came to Glasgow and joined the Partick Police. Here, under Captain Cameron, every facility was accorded him to improve himself as an athle e. There is no ,vant of hammers, balls, etc., at Partick, nor is there any scarcity of companions to practice with. Here let us offer our congratulations to the Police Officials, at Govan, Partick, and Glasgow on the inestimable privi– leges which the men who are inclined to athletics enjoy. A policeman cannot be too much encouraged to practise out– door exercises. It benefits himself, and makes him more fit for his duty, and thus benefits the community in general.
