His first prize was won there, and coincident with this was G. H. Johnston's first appearance at the Haddo House games. Johnston had just returned from Carli le, and was in excel1ent form, and on that occasion threw the hammer 114ft. odd, Ewen being 93ft. 11in. This wa' ten years ago, when Ewen was a lad, albeit a big one, of eighteen years of age. He tells us, however, that Johnston's throwing on that day made an impression upon him which more recent years of closer rivalry has scarcely effaced. Ewen's first performance of note was at Dunecht game·, eight years ago, being then twenty years old, when he defeated "Kenny" l\1'Rae with both hammer and stone. Owing to the fact that Ewen ought to have been attending a class at college instead of competing at a Highland gathering, he entered on this occasion under the name of J. S. Elliot. 11'Rae, who was now much past his best, instead of being chagrined over his defeat, was full of admiration of this young athlete, and took much pains in instructing him in the art of caber tossing, at which he soon began to win prizes. At Buchan gathering last year, after winning ten first prizes at New Blyth, Ewen was first at throwing heavy hammer, 24lb., 76ft., first, putting the heavy ball 23~lb., 33ft. 8in.
