TOM CANNON OF TYLDESU~Y. 109 match drew a gate of 700 or 800 people, who paid sixpence for admission, but Cannon and his opponent did not get one penny out of the "gate." Cannon's next match was again t Harry Lord, whom he defeated in 18 minutes. At t Helens, after losing the first fall against Jim Borker in 8 minutes, Tom defeated his man, winning the second fall in 32 minutes and the next in 12 minutes. The match was for £ 2 5 a-side, and, like all his previous encounters, was in the catch-as-catch-can style. After many other local vic– tories, Tom left the mining busine s and sailed on the "City of Berlin," June 3, 1875, from Liverpool for New York. In the States Cannon first met Andre Chrastol, the well known French wrestler. The match was made at 1 1 stone for 200 dols. a-side, and Cannon won in I hour 20 minutes. This was Tom's first match in the Grreco– Roman style. Cannon didn't seem taken with America at this stage, and after a brief stay returned to England. In London he wrestled in two tournaments in the Lambeth Daths,· \Vestmin ter Bridge road, and won both, the Corni h and the Grreco-Roman style. There was a third style, how– ever, for which Cannon didn't enter; this was Cumberland, and was carried off by Jack Wannop. On this occasion annon defeated 22 men. While in London Cannon joined the Metropolitan Police Force, but, although well suited to the work, he had so many tempting offers from music halls that he was finally induced to re ign, and accept an engage– ment to appear in conjunction with John Graham, the celebrated Carlisle wrestler, at the South London Mu ic Hall, at a salary of£ ro per week. After completing a most successful season with Graham, Cannon again sailed for America, April, 1882, in search of fame and dollars. At that time the great William Ma.ldoon was the acknow– ledged champion of America, while, besides his fame as a wrestler, Maldoon was in great request as a trainer and adviser of pugilists.
