WEIGHT LIFTING. greater swing, when that is allowed. The feat proper is one straight lift from the floor right up, no swing. To "lever-push'' a heavy dumbbell means that the athlete, after having lifted the weight to the shoulder with both hands, pushes the dumbbell with, say, the right arm up– wards, at the same time inclining the body to the left and downwards. This motion is continued until the arm i straight. During that time-which is sometimes quite sixty seconds-the weight has not been raised more than a few inches, perhaps not even that, but has simply been held where it was, while the body has been lowered under it. The athlete then gradually recovers to the perpendicular, keeping the arm straight as he rises, and the feat is accomplished. Another method in the same style is to use a long– handled bar-bell. The handle is long because it is easier bringing it to the shoulder. When the weight is put on end, the strong man grasps at the mark in the middle, and simply cants it over his shoulder, and the weight is thus half mast high without any exertion whatever. The "push– ing'' which follows is the same as that already de cribed. andow is credited with doing 250 lb . in this fashion. To ''jerk" or "one motion '' that amount of pounds is practi– cally impossible. In "jerking" a dumbbell a short handle is generally used, and the weight is lifted from the floor to the shoulder, and then "jerked" suddenly to stretch of arm above the head, one hand only being used throughout. There are several ways of lifting-or, as weight-lifters say, "turning "-the dumbbell to the shoulder, which often raises heated argu– ments amongst the men of muscle, but to lift the dumbbell "clean," without any "mangling," is certainly the better feat. In "one motion" lifting, the weight is snatched from the floor to full stretch of arm above the head with one hand only, and without bending the body underneath the weight or pushing it any part of the way.
