WEIGHT LIFTING. 117 shoulder, every different kind of weight manipulation an equal chance. This could only be brought about by the men themselves agreeing as to the relative value of each and every feat compared to another. For instance, if to "jerk" 15olb. ''clean" was recognised as being equal to "lever– pushing" r 8olb., and holding 5olb. horizontal from the shoulder was equal to "jerking" 15olb., or ''lever-pushing" 18olb., then the strong-man question would not require to be discussed. But each is so full of his own style, and so prejudiced against all others, that any agreement seems hopeless. The simplest and easiest way to decide would be to declare the man champion who could excel in the greatest number of feats. He surely would be the strongest man. ome, of course, would insist, however that he was only the best all-round man. The complainers might defeat him at one particular feat or another. There is almost as much difficulty in getting strong men to agree to any con– diti01Ys in a match, as there is in accepting the weight of their dumbbells.
