Men of Muscle, and the Highland Games of Scotland, etc.
130 MEN OF MUSCLE. Mr. Clerance Whistler to assist as judges. The performance took place in the West end of the mission. The judges properly balanced the scale, and had the different weights correctly tested, and as will be seen they were a good few ounces over weight. The judges then selected a level piece of ground and put down a scratch to throw from, measuring each throw from the exact spot where delivered--all being done strictly in accordance w'th the rules of the N.A.U.C.A. of this country. Mr. Dinnie first tried the 56lb. weight throwing. In his first four throws he stood with his right foot to the scratch his best being 26ft. 7in. He then put his left foot to the scratch and by swinging it twice round his head he sent it precisely 29ft. 7in. Mr. Dinnie says he has only lately practised this style and finds it the best to make a long dis– tance, and it is certainly within the rules of a fair standin;:;– throw. The weight of the missile was 57lb. 12oz., and it measured 14! inches over all in length. Throwing 2Ilb. hammer (which weighed IO oz. over weight) 89ft. 7in. Throwing 16lb. hammer (5 oz. over weight) 1r3ft. 8in. Throwin?" 12lb. hammer (6 oz. over weight) 127ft. rnin.; with one hand 118ft. I in. 11 Continuing the Pacific Life further dds :- " These are the exact weights without handles. The handles measured 3ft. 6in. outside the hammers and were of stiff hickory varying from! to If inches in diameter and weighing from 10 to 12oz. each. Putting the stone 21lb. (3 oz. over weight) 38ft. 1in. This was done at the fourth trial, the shortest being 36ft. 6in. Putting the stone 16lb. (4 oz. over weight) 44ft. uin. This was done at the fifth trial, all being over 43ft. 6in. Putting stone 14lb. (4 oz. over weight) 48ft. 6in. One putt measured 49ft. 7in., but Dinnie's toe going on top of the scratch of course was not allowed. We, the Pacific Li'fe continues, guarantee the correctness of all of these weights and measure– ments which now stand as the best on record in America,* and it is but fair to state that had not the ground been somewhat wet the records might have been much better. Mr. ""The New l'ork Clij,,'>er and other Sporting authorities have not accepted these throws as records.
