Next in merit we would class Alexander M 'Culloch, Matthew Marr, George Davidson, James Fleming, Gideon Perrie, Duncan C. Ross, and John Anderson. M'Hardy, John and William Tait, and John George cannot be compared with the others in hammer-throwing, because, with the exception of John Tait, they generally threw in the pendulum style, while John threw with the turn. However, had these men adopted the same method as the others they would probably have ranked close behind Dinnie. In putting some athletes prefer a stone, some a ball. Owen Duffy was particularly partial to the latter. Dinnie has some tremendous putts with both kinds of missiles, which we would give much to have seen performed. That he is truthful in his statements we cannot doubt, and that being so he must again take the front; but we place Duffy, George Davidson, the Tai ts, John George, John l\I'Pherson, Donald Ross, and i • A. Cameron close beside him, with G. M. Ross, Charles M 'Lean, Duncan C. Ross, and Donald Gillespie not far behind. In tossing the caber Dinnie easily takes premier position, but just how M'Hardy, John George, and the Taits would compare with M 'Rae, Fleming, Davidson, Morrison, Johnston, Cameron, and Munro, is impossible to say. If all these athletes had met in competition, the results might have been widely different. With the caber, for instance, Dempster, of Dund e, Donald M'Donald, or Matthew Marr, might just walk in amongst the leading prizes; while in the hammer-throwing and putting the calcu– lations might be equally at fault.
