Men of Muscle, and the Highland Games of Scotland, etc.
PREFACE. THE following collection of the records of Scottish Athletics, etc., were published in the Glasgow Evening Times in the winter, 1900 -1901, and brought out columns of letters, for and against, from all over Scotland. It is impossible to µlease everybody, but it is safo;factory to state that, with one exception, the general tone of all the letters was in praise of the articles and their object, which is to encourage and foster a loYe of athletics in the youth of Scotland, and to kindle a desire in the bosoms of our young men to emulate the feats of the champions herein described. We have endeavoured to place before the reader a p1.;11 picture of the athletes from their boyhood days, dealing with their early occupations and their little peculiaritie ·. In electing the material for the records we haYe picked out what we considered the best performances, remembering that victories are easily forgotten but that defeats are loudly called. Objection may be taken in some cases where the careers of certain athlete. haYe not been so fully dealt with as their merit may demand. In instances of this Hnd it is not be au e we wish to give any one atblett; prominence over another 3 qually goocl, but because th facts were not at our command. In no case haYe w1; allowed prejudice to stand in the way, but have steadfastly endeavoured to deal fairly and honestly with each man
