Men of Muscle, and the Highland Games of Scotland, etc.
60 l\1EN OF MUSCLE. was not certified as being level, although on some occasions, the balls were weighed by neutral parties and found correct. Early in his career M'Culloch threw a 24lb. hammer 89 ft., and a r6lb., u8ft. 6in. This was at the games held at Stornoway, and Kenneth M'Rae was present and saw the throws and also witnessed the weighing of the hammers. At Drummond, cc Sandy" had the best distance ever accom– plished there with the r 6lb. hammer, viz., r r 8ft. 4ins., while at Callander, he also has the best distance with the heavy hammer which weighs 23lb. With the missile M'Culloch made 92ft. The same day he threw a r6}lb. hammer rr6ft. 6ins. cc Sandy'' also holds the record at Alva * with a distance of 94ft. with the heavy hammer, while at Aberdeen he won first prize with r r4ft. 6ins. The hammer at Aberdeen is said to weigh slightly over r 6lb. Away up amongst the hills at Luib, where he at present resides, M'Culloch practises hammer-throwing most ardently. In a letter which we received from him lately, he says he has been doing great work in this department. The hammer with which he practises weighs r6lb., bu• it has a nice shaft 4ft. 3ins. long. With this missile M'Culloch maintains he can make r 2oft. with four or five tries. Three tries are all that is allowed at games. M'Culloch, however, is not such a consistent performer as Johnston; some days "Sandy" may throw exceptionally we1l, and the next meet– ing may find him yards back. He wrestles a little some– times, and with practice he would soon be in the front rank. We have repeatedly advised him to follow up this branch of athletics and develop the latent power which he undoubtedly possesses. He has weight, strength, and agility, -everything that a wrestler requires except practice and experience. With these two qualifications M'Culloch would * ~Morrison also claims the bt:st throw at Alva.
