HEVIEW OF THE ATHLETIC SEASON OF 1867-8. 27 fields small and the times bad, C. 13.E. Malet carrying ofF the lion's share ofprizes; F. Schultze ofthe London Scottish R.V. againappeared to advantage, andwon the 300 yards strangers' race. j The London AthleGticluh may be said to havbe gnn the metropolitan season proper on October 12, at Brompton. A novelty for a London meeting was introduced in the shape of putting the weight, which was wonby W. F. F. Moore with the very fair"put" of 34 feet 4 inches, although some doubt exists as to the weight ofthe shot being the legitimate 16 lbs. For the 130 yards handicap, Oapel Hanbury, a newmember (8| yards), wasmade a very hot favourite, especially afterhe hadwon his heat in the fastest time. The good thing, however, was cleverlyupset in the final by Gr. A. Jupp (6yards), who just caught Hanbury on the post and won by 6 inches. H. A. Sari(8 yards) finishing third, almost dead heating Hanbury. 0. D. Dnnt of the South NorwoodA.O., with 106 yards, run ning very skilfully, won the open mile with ease at the finish in good time, viz., 4 minutes 20^ seconds, beating J. 0. Smith, Willesden C.(O13. 0 yards), who was alsovery nearly caught by A.V. Maddock of Richmond (50 yards). The latter ran extremelywell, doing his full mile in about as good as 4 minutes 40 seconds, and holding thirty yards of his start from the scratchman, W. M. Chinnery (London A.O.), who finished fifth, covering his mile in 4 minutes 36 seconds. "W.Cross, a promising novice from the Thames E.G. Homerse cured theclub handicap (aquarter of amile), easily enough when receiving 14 yards; he scattered a poor field and won as he liked, while B. J. Colbeck showed unusually versatile talent by winning in one afternoon the 120 yards hurdles from scratch, the long jump, and the club half mile race, beating A. King in the last named after a fair race in 2 minutes 5|- seconds. The City Amateur Athletic Club occupied the Middle sex County Cricket Ground on October 19, but with the exception of the 100 yards and quarter-mile open han dicaps, the contests werevery tame. In the finalheat of the former, F. E. Wear(3 yards) won a close race by six inches only in 10^ seconds, G. P. Butcher second, all the others close up. In the quartermile, T. W.
