This gentleman showed to advantage at both lonagnd short distances as well as in jumping, andhis successes ought to be again heardof. The open quarter oaf mile fell an easy victory to E. Farnworth of LiverpooJl,. Gr.Cham bers, Amateur Athletic Cluba,ndT. Griffith, City Amateur Athletic Club, were the only foreigners who appeared, whilst sixteen local men cameto thepost. The coursewas on turf, fivelaj)sto themile, and the going very heavyowing to previous rain. From the times made there can be no doubt that thedistance wasmeasured short. After thefirst mile, itwas patent that all but ttheree strangerswere out of the race. Griffith led for a couple of miles, then Farn worth let out afeeler but again dropped in the rear, and so continued tillthe lastlap but one, when he went to front in a verydoubtful styleof walking, and won by 40 yards, not withstanding Griffith's gallant efforts, in 57 minutes 30 seconds. Chambers third, two minutes behinGdriffith. The Gonville and Caius College sports opened the season of the Cambridge University A.C., at Fenner's, on October 30 and 31. Nothing worthy of mention occurred on the first day, but a great many specta tors appeared on the 31st, to witness the celebrated crack, J. H. Ridley, from EtonCollege, make his dehut on the Cambridge track. The event wasan open quarter of a mile, in which A. T. Scott, TrinityCollege, Cambridge, held a commanding lead alongthe top of the ground;but Eidley spurted at the orchard, and won by six yards in 53|- seconds, with something in hand. The only other good performance was Mowatt's winning the 220 yards race in 23| seconds, if that be correct.
