EEVIE'W OP THE ATHLETIC SEASON, 18G7-8! 31 of Mancliester tlie scratchman, going away at a terrinc pace, and catching his men too soon, had to retire in the straight dead beaten, leaving the race to T. C. Collett, Civil Service (31 yards), who just headed E. G. Simpson, Jnn., Darlington A. 0. (22yards), and H. J. Chinnery, London A. C. (14 yards). In the fonrth heat W. Page, of the Thames E. 0. (31 yards), heat J. Elphinstone, London A. 0. (20yards), a plucky young runner, who was over-weighted, and G-. P. Butcher, London A. 0. (20 yards), whose pace did not serve him in lieu of staying powers, (x.D. Lister of theWest London E. 0. (40 yards), who had the limit, ran well, and finished first in the fifth heat. The sixth heat fell to S. Piie, S. Norwood (28 yards), H. J. Homer, London A. C. (12 yards), the favourite, who made the same erroras M'Laren did in the third heat, and forced the pace, fallingexhausted close by home. In the seventh heat 0. Dixon, Middlesex A. 0. (36 yards), won easily, the only runner of note behind him being H. C. Eiches, Stella E. 0. (18 yards), whdoid not seem able to stay. The final heat was won by sheer gamencss; Page finishing three yards ahead of Dixon, who was made a great favourite; Garnier, who is too heavily made for a runner, getting home third, thteime being 51^ seconds. The club 300 yards handicap was won very easily by "W. M. Chinnery, from scratch, in 36 seconds. Jackson, the celebrated hurdle racer, carrying off the lion's share of the prizes. The 120 yards strangers' handicap, commanding no less than forty-seven entries, about half of whom came to the post. The "foreign" element con sisted of W. M. and H. J. Chinnery (London A. 0.), neither of whom started, and W. M'Laren and W. M. Tennent, both of the Manchester A. C.
