Mackay, Blackheath School (5 yards), whowas by far the betterman, but was unluckily shut out. On November 23, the' Amateur Athletic Cluh held a meeting at Beaufort House with small success, only seventeen starters appearing for three races run in five heats, and the attendance beingsparse to an extreme. The 150 yards chib handicap was won by CR. . Alexander (7 yards), beatingJ. H. Ridley (scratch) by abare foot in15 seconds; the latter finishing two yards ahead of H. J. Chinnery (8 yards).W. 0.Collett (1 yard), who haddead- heated Chinnery in thethird trial heat, was out of it in the final. Ridley hadbeaten in his heat O.G.Emery of the Civil Service,to whomhe allowed four yards. P.M.Thorn­ ton (5| yards), utterly ouotf form, had finished behind Collett and Ohinnery in their heat, and T. P. Burra (3 yards) had run the winner, Alexander, atofoot inhis heat. W. James, of the London A. C(.SOyards), almost walked off with the open half mile handicap; E. Hawtrey,Eton College (40 yards) getting second, and W. M. Ohinnery, London A. 0.,from scratch giving A. King, ThameRs. 0., once thought the coming man haatlf a mile, six yards,and a good beating forthird place. It is hardly necessary to state that the handicapperasgain made 0. O. Emery (25 yards) a present ofa piece of plate for winning the mem­ bers' quarter mile handicap. T. C. Collett (35 yards) got second, and H. J. Chinnery (19 yards), the only other starter, was necessarily third. The Middlesex Athletic Cluh, formedfor the benefit of amateurs resident inthe north ofLondon, held their first meeting on November 23, at the Middlesex County Cricket Ground. The entries for the open 200 yards handicap included the well known names of W. M'Laren,Manchester A.C.G; .H.Jupp, LondoAn .C.; and Captain Garnier, Royal Engineers; handsome prizes being offered for the three first places. M'Laren from scratch ran a deadheat with C. Dixon, Middlesex A.O. (10 yards), in the third heat, making capital time, viz., 21^ seconds. Six trial heats, all closelycontested, were run, the winner at length turning up in A. Vcitch, Phoenix Cricket Club (10 yards), who beat W. E. Miller, North London R.C. (11yards), by half a yard only for second place; M'Laren, who experienced the greatest difficulty D
