Modern Athletics 1868
36 MODERN ATHLETICS. mile was run in 5 minutes 2 seconds. Morgan and Michell made all the running, andon turning the corner for home in the last lap both were strictly level, hut Morgan, havinga little more left inhim, spurted, and won by live yards in 15 minutes 38 secondsO;hinnery third. Pemhrolce College, Cambridge, also introduced another novelty in the shapeof a 120 yards hurdle racefor their strangers at Fenner's oNn ovember 30. There were two trial heats,_in the firstof which E. Fitzherbert, StJ.ohn's, gave promise of the future form he displayed by beating T. Milvain, Trinity Hall, whloed over the last flightby a foot in the run in. In the second heat 0. N. Jackson, Magdalen Eall, Oxford, who is probably the best hurdle racer either Universityhas possessed for some time, had it all his own way, AW. . Lambert, StJ.ohn's, never being with him. In the final Jackson came away from Fitz herbert at the third flight and won by 3 yards in 18 seconds. The result ofthis race shows that haJdackson been able to contend inthe Oxford and Cambridge sports the following spring,he would have been almost certain to have won the hurdles for Oxford, as Fitzherbert, whom he defeated onthe present occasion, ran a deadheat with Pitt-Taylor, who won at Beaufort House in the Cam bridge University sports on March 19, 1868. No other "tall" performances occurred at mtheiseting. The London Athletic Chcb meeting, on November 30, proved one of the most successful gatherings that club ever held, though it came offin the midst ofpouring rain and over muddy and heavy ground. H. A. Sari (9 yards) receiving half a yard more from G. H. Jupp (6^yards) than in the Octobermeeting, and having20 yards further to travel, turned the tables othne latter, finishing firstin the final heat of the 150 yards, Jupp getting seconadn,d J. M. Burke(9 yards) third, barely ayard between the first three. The open half-mile handicap fell to H. J. Homer (30 yards), who, letting out a little more each time, won rather easily in the final, beating O. F. May of the West London R. C. (60 yards), and C. D. Dunt, South Norwood A. C. (28 yards) in 2 minutes 6 seconds through the slush. Seventeen started for the open- two- miles walking handicap, when S. PS.mith of Blackheath, with 26 seconds, beat T.
