Modern Athletics 1868

REVIEW OF THE ATHLETIC SEASON, 1867-8. 69 carried off the lion's share ofprizes, as lie won the high jump at about 6 fee2t inches, the100 yards, quarter-mile, and hurdles, all easily. Of "the natives" C. Eatigan performed best at short distances, as he finished second to Baton in the 100 yards and quarter, whilst E. 0. Farran secured the half-milaend mile withmost ridiculous ease. Both open events fell to members of the Dublin University A. O., although Eaton would have made a close race with E. Wright, thewinner of the open 100 yards, had henot been severely cannoned byE. H. Ellis, also of the Dublin University A. 0d.i,rectly after starting. W. Murray, ofthe same club, ran a waiting race in the strangers' 600 yards hurdles, which he secured easily, H. W. D. Dunlop,a good sprinter, showedthe best form at the meeting inthe three miles walking race. He de feated J. J. Corbett anHd . F. Wilkinson,English Civil Service, very easily, in 24 minutes 15 seconds, splendid time if the competitorswent the full distance, considering the course was a very uneven one on turf and only 285 yards in circumference.
