Olympic Cavalcade

144 OLYMPIC CAVALCADE J. Beresford Jnr. won the Single Sculls and Third Trinity (Cambridge) the Fours. In the Equestrian programme Sweden scored 3 victories, Holland 2 and Switzerland r. The Winter Olympic Games were held in 1924 at Chamonix in January and February, 18 nations taking part. Great Britain won the Curling tournament and was 2nd to Switzerland in the Bob-sleigh. There is a tale to tell in this connection. Lieut.-General Sir F. A. M. Browning had been an Army hurdler of note four years earlier, but had just failed to find a place in Great Britain's athletic team. He turned his attention therefore to winter sport and in that department achieved his ambition as a member of the team captained by Lieut. W. G. Horton. Canada fulfilled expectations by defeating U.S.A. in the Ice Hockey tournament, but Norway predominated in the Winter Sports with 134-! points; Finland was 2nd with 76! points; Great Britain, 3rd, 30 points; then came U.S.A. 29 points; Sweden 26 points; Austria 25 points; Switzer– land 24 points and France 19! points. The Norwegians were particularly successful in the Ski-ing events. Norway had also 2 successes in Yachting, and Belgium r, but Great Britain was 2nd in the 8 metre course. The Weight-lifting honours were divided between Italy and Franee and those for Wrestling between U.S.A. and Switzerland, but Finland won the Bantam-weight and A. Macdonald, of Great Britain, was ·3rd in the Heavy– weight Catch-as-Catch-Can style. In the Greco-Roman style, however, Finland was predominant; but Estonia and Sweden each scored a victory. In the Shooting contests it was U .S.A. all the way, with Norway a good 2nd and Great Britain and France placed but taking somewhat humble positions. There was a noteworthy disappointment in Lawn Tennis in that Mile Lenglen was not able to defend her laurels, but she had very worthy succes– sors in Miss Helen Wills, U.S.A., Miss McKane, G.B., and Mile Vlasto, Franee, who was beaten in the final of the Ladies' Singles by Miss Helen Wills, while Miss McKane, G.B., took the 2nd place. In the Final of the Ladies' Doubles Mrs. Wightman and Miss Wills, U.S.A., beat Mrs. Covell and Miss McKane, Great Britain. The Men's tennis and the Mixed Doubles brought to light Tilden and Johnston, U.S.A., and Anderson, Patterson, O'Hara Wood, Australia, Brugnon, Borotra, Lacdste and Cochet, Franee. In the Men's Singles Cachet, France, was.defeated by Vincent Richards, U.S.A., and Richards, partnering F. T. Hunter, beat Brugnon and Cochet in the Men's Doubles, while in the Mixed Doubles Mrs. Wightman a~d R. N. Williams, U.S.A., beat Mrs. Jessup and V. Richards, U.S.A., and tn the match for 3rd place Bouman and Timmer, Holland, had a walk-over from McKane and Gilbert, Great Britain.
