AMSTERDAM, I928 I6I <;:ontinuing the Aquatic section, it may be said that the British Olympic Swimmers' Committee, through the disbursement of accumulated funds to the English, Scottish and Welsh Swimming Associations, were able to make a good start with the training of the British team. Various sums of money were raised in Scotland, by the Cross Channel Club and the Swimming Times of London, and swimmers finally chosen by the Olympic Selection Committee for Gn~at Britain to take part in the final · trials at Blackpool, while special methods were adopted in regard to Water Polo. The British Ladies' team failed to achieve a Ist place, although the bright– est British hope, Miss Ellen King, was beaten by only a touch after equalling World record in her heat of the Ioo metres Back Stroke. In the Ioo metres Free Style Joyce Cooper and Jean McDowall secured 3rd and 4th places, while our 400 metres Relay team (King, Cooper, Stewart and Tanner) made a great effort in that race and were but 4 seconds outside Olympic record and I)'2 secs. behind the American team, which won in 4 mins. 47·6 secs. South Africa was vd. For the rest Miss A. L. Osipowich, U.S.A., won the IOO metres Free in I min. II secs., Miss M. J. Braun, Holland, the Back Stroke in i min. 22 secs. and Miss H. Schr<rder, Germany, tpe 200 metres Breast in 3 mins. 12·6 secs; Miss M. Norelius, U.S.A., the 400 metres Free in 5 mins. 42·8 secs.; _Miss. R. B. Pirikston, U.S.A., won the High Diving from Miss G. V. Coleman, U.S.A., who was also 2rid to Miss. H. Meany, U.S.A., in the Springboard Diving. In the Men's. section the great Johnny Weissmuller, U.S.A., won the _ Ioo metres Free in 58·6 secs.; G. H. Kojac, U.S.A., the IOO metr.es Back, I min. 8·2 secs.; Y. Tsuruta, Japan, tire 200 metres Breast in 2 mins. 48·8 secs. The 400 metres Free was won by V.. A. Zorilla, Argentine, from A. M. Charlton, Australia, and A. Borg; Sweden, in 5 mins. I·6 secs. Borg, however, returning I9 mins. 51·8 secs., .beat Charlton and the famous Americail;C. L. Crabbe, at I)Oo .metres Free. In the 8oo metres Relay U.S.A. defeated Japan and Canada in 9 mins. 36·2 secs. The High Diving was won by P. Desjardines, U.S.A., who took also the Springboard Diving. . · The Water Polo resulted in a win for Germany over Hungary, with Franee placed 3rd. ' - . America had obviously taken the palm, but Japan and the Argentine Were beginning to look dangerous. In the early stages of the Water Polo Great Britain defeated Czechoslovakia and then Holland, the latter only after extra time had been played. British play was perhaps unnecessarily ~o~~h and was characterized by many needless fouls committed by the ~ rtttsh players. There was no Shooting competition at this Olympiad.
