204 OLYMPIC CAVALCADE Hungary had a young team of very keen soldiers who had been playing Hard Polo in Budapest. Owing to the difficulty of handicapping and at the same time avoiding one-sided play, which would disappoint the spectators, the tournament was played in two sections. Argentine, Great Britain and Mexico played in the top half and Germany and Hungary in the lower half. The losers of the top half and the winners of the lower half played off for the 3rd place. As the result turned out, Great Britain beat Mexico by I3 goals to u, Hungary drew with Germany 8-8, and then beat them by I6 goals to 6. Argentine beat Mexico by I5 goals to ), and in the Final Argentine beat Great Britain I I---o, and in the match for 3rd place Mexico beat Hungary by I6 goals to 2. For each of the 3 weapons, Foil, Epee and Sabre, Great Britain chose I5 Fencers, and 6 Fencers with each weapon formed the final Olympic team. It was disastrous on the eve of departure to find that Miss Neligan, the British Lady Foil Champion, and winner of the European Championship in I933, would be unable to corp.pete owing to an attack of appendicitis. Fencing was carded out in two large Berlin gymnasia, the Turnhalle and the Kuppelsaal, bunhe Epee events took place on the Hard Tennis court. The British competitors found it somewhat of a hardship to live in the Olympic Village, which they had to leave before 8 a.m., and to remain in the salles until IO p.m. or later and usually without either rest or an adequate amount of food. In Great Britain both men and women had been training steadily in gymnastics for some time. None the less, it was decided that Great Britain should not be represented in Men's Gymnastics but should send a team of women. The result of the Individual Championship was K. A. M. Schwarz– -mann, Germany, E. Mack, Switzerland, K. Frey, Germany. The results of the Apparatus Championship were, Horizontal Bar, A. Saarvala, Finland; Rings, A.
