THE ATHENIAN CELEBRATION, 1906 49 to be no scoring by nations for the Olympic Championship, bU:t it has always been, and always will be, the custom of competitors, pressmen, officials (unofficially) and spectators to keep some sort of tally for their own guidance and satisfaction. More especially is this so where the purely athletic events are concerned. But times change and events are, from time to time, added to or deleted from the programme. But people like to assess the result of a festival as a whole and some sort of private system of reckoning points has always obtained with the Press and the spectators. At the Athenian Celebration in 1906 there were contested twenty-four athletic events in the Stadium and the scoring therein was confined to the following eleven countries: America, England, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Hungary, Greece, France, Finland, Austria and Italy.
