The race throughout was well contested ; and the whole distance was accomplished in two r f * ' liours ; and twenty minutes. Captain Thomson of the 74th regiment, while stationed at Aberdeenin the year 1808, undertook to walk twenty-one miles in three hours. He startedon the 5th of May at the 7th mile-stone on the Ellon road, returning to the 4th, until he should performthe distance, which he accomplishedin fourminutes and a half lesS'thanthe time allowed. On the 22d of February 1812, JamesWat son, a glazier, for a wagerof *£10, went from Whitechapel Churchto Romford in Essex, and back, in threehours,the distancebeing twenty- three miles. He started at six o^lock, and reachedRomford at twentyminutes pastseven. Having refreshedten minutes,he startedagain on his return, and completedthe distancein four minutesless thanthe given time. On
